Sustainable Kitchen and Bathroom Renovation Tips for 2025

Sustainability. Absolutely a buzzword and for good reason. Collectively we are awakening to a smarter, kinder, more conscious future where our decisions and their consequences are considered greatly. For our future selves, for future generations, for the world that is to be. Fortunately we are living in a time where information is in abundance - we are able to research extensively and make good, solid decisions in almost every aspect of our lives, if given the time (and patience) to do so, of course. So can we be so bold as to say that having access to this endless pot of knowledge (A.K.A the internet) is also...overwhelming, exhausting and more times than not, leaves us feeling as though we are a dog chasing our own tail? Well, fret not! We have done the ground work when it comes to sustainable renovations (and the crowd goes wild!), so you don't have to. Read on to discover how you can make your renovation as sustainable as possible and create a home that not only looks good, but feels good, too.

1. Use Locally Sourced and Sustainable Materials

  • NZ Timber: Use FSC-certified native timbers (like beech or pine) or reclaimed wood for cabinetry and flooring.

  • NZ-Made Products: Choose New Zealand-made benchtops, cabinetry, and fittings to reduce transport emissions and support local jobs.

  • Recycled Materials: Look for recycled glass splashbacks or benchtops made from reclaimed stone or timber.

2. Opt for Eco-Friendly Benchtops

  • Sustainable Surfaces: Use options like PaperStone, bamboo, or recycled composite materials.

3. Choose Energy-Efficient Appliances

  • Energy Star Rated: Use EECA’s Energy Rating Labels to choose efficient fridges, ovens, and dishwashers.

  • Induction Cooktops: These are more efficient and safer than gas or traditional electric hobs.

  • Smart Layout: Place your fridge in a cool spot, away from ovens or sunny windows, to reduce energy use.

4. Install Water-Saving Fixtures

  • Low-Flow Taps: Choose NZ Water Efficiency Labelling Scheme (WELS)-rated taps and mixers.

  • Efficient Dishwashers: Look for models with high water efficiency and the ability to connect to hot water cylinders.

5. Incorporate Passive Design

  • Natural Ventilation: Use windows, louvres, or rangehoods that reduce the need for mechanical ventilation.

  • Daylighting: Maximise daylight with skylights or light-coloured surfaces to reduce artificial lighting needs.

6. Use Low-VOC Paints and Sealants

  • VOCs (volatile organic compounds) can harm air quality. Look for low-VOC or eco-friendly paints instead.

7. Minimise Waste

  • Re-Use Where Possible: Keep your existing cabinetry carcasses and reface the doors if they're still in good condition.

  • Recycling Demolition Waste: Donate usable appliances or cabinetry to organisations like Habitat for Humanity ReStores.

  • Recycling Stations: Build a dedicated recycling and composting centre into your kitchen design.

8. Sustainable Lighting

  • LED Lighting: Choose LED bulbs and fixtures—long-lasting and energy-efficient.

  • Solar Where Possible: If you have solar panels, consider a smart kitchen setup that uses power during peak production hours.

9. Smart Ventilation and Insulation

  • Rangehoods with Filters: Choose energy-efficient rangehoods with recirculating carbon filters.

  • Underfloor Insulation: If you’re pulling up the floor, add insulation (e.g., Terra Lana made from NZ wool) to reduce heat loss.
